MIRAGE AT THE CROSSROADS, officially released on May 10, 1999 (Mother's Day), offers a more intense continuation of Biff Johnson's journey into esoteric soundhikes and audio imagery. The concept remains, but the presentation has changed this time. Looping techniques and sequencing are more extensive than on the earlier "Reading the Bones." Steve Roach's production led to actual participation on "A Road from Somewhere" and "Rendezvous at the Crossroads" Steve's production genius was crucial to "Rust on the Blade" 's creation from source material imported to the Timeroom in Tucson.
Some quick thoughts on the nine stories that compose "Mirage at the Crossroads":
"Five Sticks Burning": This is about Steve Roach and the shaman's smoke
"Urban Ritual": Biff lives in an urban area and his rituals are influenced by: blacktop, neon and overcrowding
"Dawn Prey": It's early. The predator is still hunting as the first storms of winter approach.
"Rust on the Blade": Are we on the cutting edge, or just rust on the blade?
"Feldspar and Mica": Homage to the granite spires of the Sierra Nevadas.
"Road from Somewhere": Coming in on a road from somewhere stuck between nowhere and not much else.
"Lighthouse in the Firmament": Looking for a familiar place in a mysterious landscape.
"Badaraca": An interesting place in the high Sierra. The name conjures so much more than a campsite.
"Rendezvous at the Crossroads": It's lonely and tumbleweeds are the only things there to meet us at the crossroads.
Biff is continuing his search for the ancient memories now seemingly lost in the daily routines of our regimented lives. He hopes these audio journeys will provide an escape for everyone interested in putting on some music and letting the sounds take you away to once and future daydreams. It is hard to say where this will all lead as we look ahead to future releases. The Boneyard has been in groove class for sometime now so we suspect somethin' jumpin' is in the works. Things change and we will always do what's next.
